Dedham – Walter F. Welch, O.D., died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Thursday, September 26, 2019. He was 91.

Dr. Welch was born in Mission Hill on November 17, 1927, a son of the late Walter M. and Mary (McManus) Welch, and was raised in Roslindale. He graduated from Boston College High School and after that served as a corpsman with the United States Navy at the conclusion of World War II at the Chelsea Naval Hospital.

Following his discharge from the service he earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University and his Doctor of Optometry degree from The New England College of Optometry in Boston. Dr. Welch's practice was well-known and popular in Waltham. His first office was in the Mercantile Building on Main Street before a move brought him to a Moody Street location. He loved his work and his patients and retired when he was 82.

Following his marriage to Belmont native Greta L. Gould the couple made their home in Belmont before moving to Waltham in 1961. Their move to Dedham came fifteen years later.

Walter loved spending time ocean kayaking, especially off Popponesset Beach in Mashpee where he prided himself on his bluefish catches. In addition to the Cape, vacations to Cape Breton, Canada brought many happy memories and at home he was a talented gardener.

In addition to his beloved wife, Greta, he leaves his children, Michael G. Welch (Donna) of Burrillville, Rhode Island, Mary Lou Welch of Mashpee, David G. Welch (Annie Yen) of Waltham, Suzanne C. O'Neill (William) of Dedham, Lisa A. Welch of Walpole and Julie Welch of Austin Texas; grandfather of Beth Anne and Andrew Emerzian and Liam, Christopher, Kailene and Fiona O'Neill; great-grandfather of Yana Rose O'Neill and Kacey, Caleb and Aria Emerzian.

Funeral services are private.
