Arlington - Mrs. Teresa M. (Opila) Dumas, of Arlington, formerly of Waltham, died at home on Sunday, December 11, 2016, after a long illness. She was 75.
Teresa was born February 10, 1941 in Lublin, Poland, the youngest daughter of the late Bartholomew and Leonia (Wiater) Opila. Following the end of WWII and the death of her mother, Teresa and her family immigrated to the United States, where she was raised by her sister, Aleksandra, and their father.
The family eventually settled in Dorchester after first living in Arkansas. Teresa attended and graduated from the former Cardinal Cushing High School in Boston.
Teresa married Thomas G. Dumas in the Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Boston. Teresa and Tom lived in Medford, then Wayland, until they eventually moved to Waltham. Most recently, Tom and Teresa lived in Arlington. Teresa was a longtime employee of the Nielsen Marketing Research Company before retiring in 2006.
A mother first and foremost, Teresa was dedicated to her family. She spent summers in western Massachusetts, where she enjoyed attending concerts at Tanglewood and long walks. Teresa was an avid reader, history buff, and gifted cook.
In addition to her sister Aleksandra, Teresa leaves her husband of 54 years, Tom; their children, Craig T. Dumas of Franklin, Robin A. Dumas of Watertown and Caroline T. Dumas of Belmont; her granddaughter, Julia T. Fontana of Belmont; her brother, Lester Opila of Braintree; her sister-in- law, Carol Ann Bartoli of Andover and many nieces and nephews.
Teresa was predeceased by her five older siblings Loda, Michael, Stefanie Dacko, Lucien, and Anthony.
Family and friends will honor and remember Teresa's life by gathering on Saturday, January 14th, 2017 in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham where her Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Burial is private in Highland Meadows Cemetery, Belmont. There are no calling hours.
