Wayland – Mrs. Ruth A. (Perry) Valente, of Wayland, died at her home at Carriage House at Lee's Farm on Saturday, August 18, 2018. She was 93.

Ruth was born in Waltham on March 13, 1925, the middle daughter of the late Albert J. and Ethel R. (Dobson) Perry and was raised in Watertown. She was a graduate of Watertown High School and after her children were grown went back to school where she earned an associate's degree from Aquinas Junior College in Newton.

Until her retirement Ruth worked for years as an administrative assistant at the Newton Police Department on Washington Street.

On November 15, 1945 she married her sweetheart, returning US Navy sailor Salvatore J. Valente. The couple lived for a time in Watertown before moving to West Newton where they raised their family. Following retirement they moved to Natick and spent many happy winters in Vero Beach, Florida.

Ruth and Sal had seventy-one years together to enjoy family, faith and friendship before his death on June 21, 2017.

The couple also loved to travel the country and the world. They saw America from coast to coast and took many trips to Canada and to Europe. Ruth was possessed of a green thumb and took great pride in her gardening skills and the beautiful flowers that flowed from it . . . she was an avid reader and loved animals of all kinds . . . especially the dogs she had throughout her life.

She leaves her childen, Robert Valente and his wife, Josephine Carpino, of Norton, Janet Harkins and her husband, Robert, of San Diego, California, Joyce Valente and Joanne DiDuca and her husband, Bruno, all of Waltham; her sister Doris Lacy of West Newton; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was also a sister of the late Kathleen Queiros.

Family and friends will honor and remember Ruth's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, August 22nd from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Thursday morning when her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery.
