Rita Cranitch will be lovingly remembered as thoughtful and always positive….kind and generous…and the first to step up to help her family and friends.

The thing that she cherished most in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to entertain in her home in Marshfield. It was a place to spend time with her friends and family…enjoy a game of bridge and take in the fresh ocean air. Perhaps she knew like all those who love the beach and salt air that heaven always seems a little closer nearby the water.

Rita reached her eternal rest in heaven on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 when she died at Southwood Nursing & Rehabilitation in Norwell. She was 90.

Born in Boston on April 14, 1930 she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Mary (Keough) Garaway. Raised in Watertown, she was a graduate of Saint Patrick's High School, class of 1948. In her parish Church of Saint Patrick she married Richard D. Cranitch on October 20, 1951. Watertown residents for many years they made Marshfield their permanent home in 1985. Married for 51 years her husband died on April 7, 2002.

Rita held administrative assistant positions for the Superintendent of Watertown Public Schools as well as a Justice in the Waltham court for many years. She also earned her real estate license and worked with McBride Realty.

Bridge was a game she played regularly at either the Marshfield or Duxbury Senior Centers where she was a familiar face. A daily communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church she also served as Eucharistic minister. She loved her volunteer work with the Sowing Seeds of Hope program in Marshfield where she drove people to appointments amongst other opportunities to help serve her neighbors.

In addition to her husband, Richard, she is predeceased by her two brothers, John and Thomas Monahan.

She leaves her children Richard D. Cranitch Jr. and his wife, Virginia of Waltham, James L. Cranitch of Hyannis, John F. Cranitch and Catherine M. Graham and her husband, Paul, all of Marshfield; her grandchildren, Timothy, Elizabeth, Christine and Patrick Graham and Kenneth Cranitch, as well as many nieces & nephews.

A private burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Waltham. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Saint Patrick's Church in Watertown at a day and time to be announced.

Memorials in her name may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02492.
