Ayer – Mr. Michael D. Barry, of Ayer, died Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at Nashoba Valley Medical Center. He was 65.

Mike was born in Waltham on July 1, 1953, a son of the late William M. and Mary Anne (McCusker) Barry. He was a 1971 graduate of Waltham High School and after that graduated from the Culinary Institute of America.

He was a chef extraordinaire and family and friends will long cherish the feasts that he prepared for the holidays. His career was spent in the hospitality industry, most recently as a general manager at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford. Before that he worked for years at the Westford Regency Hotel and at The Grog restaurant in Newburyport.

Before moving to Ayer he'd lived in Maynard and in Acton for a number of years. He was a fan of Boston's sports teams and enjoyed playing golf at local courses. At home he had a green thumb and tended to his gardens during the good weather. The summer also brought visits to Plum Island and to York Beach, Maine.

He leaves his wife, Ya Bin Zhai Barry; his children, Kelly Barry (Tyler Houghton) of Kittery, Maine, Patrick Barry (Vicki) of Epping, New Hampshire and Katherine Barry of Watertown; his grandchildren, Danica, Ashton and Savannah Barry; his step-son, Yu Bo (Qi Lu) and their children, Austin and Athena; his sisters, Linda A. Cloonan (Jack) of Millsboro, Delaware and Kathleen B. Masterson of Plymouth and his nieces, Jacey Cloonan and Emma Masterson.

He was also a brother of the late William J., Jr. and Robert F. Barry.

Family and friends will honor and remember Michael's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, February 4th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Ayer.
