Waltham - Mr. Francis L. 'Frank' McCarthy, of Waltham, died Thursday, December 7, 2017 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 84.

He was born August 6, 1933 in Boston, a son of late Francis J., Sr. and Mary T. (Barrett) McCarthy. Raised and educated in Waltham he was a graduate of Waltham High School. He honorably served his country in the United States Army in the 460th Recovery Company during the Korean War. He married Watertown native Judith A. McSorley on May 29, 1965 in Saint Patrick's Church in Watertown. They were married 40 years until her death on August 12, 2005.

He worked for over twenty-five years the City of Waltham in the Department of Public Works as a street sweeper and enjoyed retirement in 1996.

An avid New England sports fan he had a talent and knack for knowing the statistics of the players and games for his much loved, Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins. One of his daily rituals included reading the Boston Herald from cover to cover. Frank also had a keen interest in history, specifically as it related to the two world wars. His family cookouts throughout the summer were time that filled his day with happiness and with his great sense of humor he was the epitome of a man with Irish wit. He was also a former member of the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156 in Waltham.

In addition to his wife, Judy, he was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Kavafian and her late husband, Tony.

He leaves his sons, Stephen L. McCarthy and John F. McCarthy and his wife, Jennifer, all of Waltham; his grandchildren, Stephanie Campbell and her husband, Shawn, Shannon McCarthy and Erin McCarthy; his great-grandchildren Jayden, Jackson & Ariella Campbell; his niece, Carole Roche and her husband, Timothy of Watertown.

Family and friends will honor and remember Frank's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20) Waltham on Tuesday December 12th from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday when his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
