St. Augustine said . . . "Faith is to believe what you do not see . . . the reward of this faith is to see what you believe!'".
Dot Mula's life centered on her faith and her much loved parish of Saint Jude's in Waltham and she now enjoys the reward of her labors. She died peacefully at home on Friday, January 27, 2017. She was 86.
Dorothy A. Akey was born March 13, 1930 in Greenfield, Massachusetts a daughter of the late Clifford and Marie (Fischer) Akey. Raised and educated in Greenfield she graduated from Greenfield High School and earned her bachelor's degree from Arnold College in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1952. While in college she played on the varsity basketball, softball, field hockey and volleyball teams. She was awarded the Student Scholar Award at graduation.
For over 25 years, Dorothy worked as a physical education teacher and Title 1 teacher for the Waltham Public Schools before retiring. Earlier in her career she was the field hockey coach in the Weston Public Schools until 1956.
Her name is synonymous with Saint Jude's Parish and School. She and her husband, Rusty, were active in its couples club and Dot was a longtime member of the Sodality and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Her husband, Rosario A. 'Rusty' Mula died February 23, 2015.
She leaves her children Vincent A. Mula and his wife, Dawnmarie, John S. Mula and his wife, Pamy, Andrew G. Mula and his wife, Madalyn, and Mary Jo Mula-Tallia, all of Waltham; her daughter-in-law , Carolyn (Fox) Mula of Westwood; her sister and brother, Mary Sokolosky of Natick and Harold Akey of West Springfield; her grandchildren, Alison Goolbis and her husband, Robert, Anthony, Ryan, Christian and Evan Mula, Rosalie Dutch and her husband, Stephen, Britney, Sean, Jackson, and Jordan Mula, Michael and Carli Tallia, and Brianna Homsi; her great-granddaughter Lily Dutch and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Rusty in heaven Dorothy joins their son, Michael C. Mula who died April 7, 2014 and her brothers Cliff, Ralph and John Akey.
Family and friends will honor and remember Dot's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Monday, January 30th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery, Waltham.
