“Gone but never forgotten. Thank you all for your sacrifice . ”

December 7th was a Sunday in 1941 and in Honolulu, Hawaii the temperature was 84°.

Just before eight o'clock in the morning the sunshine that promised to warm the day turned into darkness.

Before the sun set two-thousand four-hundred three Americans were dead and at churches all across America, including those in Waltham, Watertown and Belmont, bells tolled, prayers were said and our parents and our grandparents vowed that we'd never forget those who died that day.

And so we won't.

It's been 75 years since any of them saw a new year or blew out a birthday candle or opened a Christmas gift.

Watertown's Phillip Zane Darch was aboard the Arizona and he left behind his mother, father and five younger sisters to mourn his passing.

May his memory and their memories be eternal.
