Mr. Charles 'Charlie' Whalen, of Waltham, died at home on Tuesday, August 31, 2021. He was 87.

Charlie was born in Waltham on June 8, 1934 a son of the late John and Helena (Loughman) Whalen. Raised and educated in Waltham he was a 1954 graduate of Waltham High School, and served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps. He married Waltham native Madeline M. Cannistraro in Sacred Heart Church on September 6, 1958.

He worked as a machinist for over thirty years at Polaroid Corporation before retiring. He also established and operated a property management business.

Charlie was a devoted husband, parent and grandparent; a highly skilled craftsman with boundless creativity and curiosity; and a patient and talented gardener. He also had a gift for connecting with strangers, winning the trust of animals, and helping those in need.

Charlie was predeceased by his siblings John and William Whalen, Evelyn Lazaro and Rita Centola.

In addition to Madeline, his wife of almost 63 years, he leaves their sons, Charles J. Whalen (Linda) of Geneva, New York, Francis C. 'Frank' Whalen (Katrina) of Westborough and John M. Whalen (Brenda) of Lunenburg; his grandchildren, Katherine Whalen (Gerben Kijne), Thomas, David and Elizabeth Whalen, Sean and Bryce Whalen; his sister, Mary Canavan of Pembroke Pines, Florida; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private.

Dear Madeline, Charlie, John and Frank: Please accept the condolences of Debbie and me on Dad's passing. More than fifty years have gone by but the memories are with me all the time. charlie was a good and loyal friend and one of the nicest people I have ever met. Please call me when you are through the funeral so we can catch up.
May Charlie rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing forever.

I was so sad and surprised to hear of Charlie's passing. He was such a wonderful man. I have missed working with Charlie on the Meals on Wheels line and will always remember his quiet, kind nature.

I am sorry about hearing the news about Charlie. I was a co-worker at Poloroid for many years with Charlie. He was the salt of the earth and a wonderful caring and gentle human being. My condolences to you Madeline and the children. Rest in Peace my friend.
