Tribute & Message From The Family

Dr. Bernard F. MacDonald of Hollywood, Florida, formerly of Waltham, died on Sunday, March 28, 2021 in the Seasons Hospice in Hollywood. He was 88.

A son of the late Allan and Florence (Chisholm) MacDonald, Bernard was born August 22, 1932 in Taunton. At the age of 12, he began working as a dental technician alongside his father; dentistry may indeed have been in his blood. Bernard went on to attend Tufts University for both his undergraduate and doctorate degree in dental science. In 1959 he purchased his first practice in Waltham and retired after forty-two years at the age of 67. He was known as having had one of the most tenured practices in the city at that time. He loved people, and they adored him.

He was a proud Navy veteran and honorably served during the Korean conflict.

Bernard married his sweetheart, Marjorie Saurman, in 1960 and they enjoyed fifty-two happy years together until her death on June 24, 2012. He had a deep love of all sports and especially had a passion for horse racing which was one of his many pastimes. It was at the track where his nickname "the Doc" originated from.

In addition to his beloved wife, Marjorie, Dr. MacDonald was predeceased by his brother and sister, the late Richard MacDonald and Lorraine Cali.

He leaves his sons, Brian F. MacDonald of Wichita, Kansas, L. Scott MacDonald of Falmouth, James A. MacDonald of Newton, and David C. MacDonald of Maynard; his grandchildren, Amanda Wells, Alysha MacDonald, Jared MacDonald, and Aubrey MacDonald; his great grandchildren, Charlie Jo Wells and Maggie Wells; his sister, Jeannette Bushee of Woburn and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Bernard's life by gathering for calling hours on Tuesday, April 6th from 4 to 7 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

My deepest sympathy. Growing up behind the McDonald cutting through your yard to get from my house to Catalano’s. Only great memories of your Dad. God Bless

My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Dr. MacDonald. He was my dentist for a number of years. I remember going to his office at the corner of Charles & Prospect Streets in Waltham. It isn't always the case that one looks forward to visiting the dentist, but it was a delight to see him. He always gave a smile, and helped enormously with dental problems I had. He was a skilled dentist, but even more importantly, a compassionate and supportive person. I saw him more as a friend. May he rest in peace.

Brian, Scott, Jamie, David and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. As you know you BOYS and your parents made such a huge impact on my life..... words will never be able to explain that. Along with all the time I got to share with you all at home. I loved working for your Dad. Everyone loved him and enjoyed his humor!! But my favorite memories are him sitting at the piano and singing show tunes!! Boy could he sing .... no wonder I love show tunes. I am sure he is singing to your Mom as I write this.
I am so very sorry....
Love you all,

Mr. MacDonald was a great guy, husband and father to Brian, Scott, Jamie & David. We had a lot of fun at the Macdonald household over the years and Bernie was the proprietor, bouncer and the mediator.

May he Rest In Peace close to his beloved wife Majorie.

Jamie, Brian, Scott and David,

My heart goes out to you all for the loss of your amazing dad! I have such fond memories of our times together on Leitha Drivie. Your pop's zany sense of humor was a delight to be around and just projected life with that smile wherever he went.

May he be resting in the presence of the glory of God reunited with your wonderful mother. I pray that God blesses and comforts your hearts during this time.

To the MacDonald family
I am so sorry for your loss. Bernie and my husband shared the same interest, the love of horse racing. It was a bond that kept them friends for many years. He is in a beautiful place now resting peacefully.

Dear family,
Your father was one of a kind.
I was frightened of the dentist until I had him.
He laughed, joked, and sang his way through your dental experience.
He almost made it enjoyable.

I am sorry for your loss. He really made a difference in so many of the lives of his patients.
